Welcome to an exhilarating journey through Colombia to explore and contribute to this unique country. Starting in Barichara you'll then head north across the snow-capped peaks of the Andes, down to pristine Caribbean beaches, experiencing a fantastic mix of community projects and adrenaline infused challenges.

Barichara Central Highlands

Your adventure begins in the breathtaking Central Highlands, renowned for its dramatic canyon landscapes, roaring rivers, waterfalls, and a relaxed pace of life.

You’ll fly into Bucaramanga, where our team will greet you and whisk you away to the charming town of Barichara, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

During your first two weeks, you’ll immerse yourself in the local community, exploring and contributing to a variety of environmentally and community-oriented projects.

Interwoven into your time will be gentle hikes to explore a local coffee plantation, neighboring towns, before the more challenging overnight canyon trek. These hikes not only allow you to discover off-grid parts of the countryside but also ensure you’re in peak condition for the main Lost City Trek in phase 2 of the adventure.

Accommodation

Local family run hostel in the town of Barichara.

Food

2 meals a day provided. Dinner will be extra in one of the many cafes in town. Budget about $15 per meal.

Colombia Gap Year Programme
Weeks 1 + 2

Teaching, Coffee Plantations and Canyon Hike

Through out your first 2 weeks you will experience this fascinating mix of:

Rural Schools: Enriching Education, 3 days
The local mayor and community warmly welcome Leap teams throughout the year to assist in rural schools with English, art, and sports lessons. These sessions are immensely popular with the children, who are eager to learn and enjoy the interaction with you. Rugby and football are especially beloved and fiercely competitive sports here, adding an extra layer of excitement and engagement.

Reforestation: Nurturing Nature and Community, 2 days
Our reforestation project collaborates with the Barichara fire brigade, who oversee a tree nursery dedicated to reforesting community land. Each team plays a crucial role in planting and sowing seeds, directly contributing to the region’s environmental health. As you work, you’ll also have the opportunity to provide impromptu English lessons to the fire brigade, fostering a unique cultural exchange and enhancing community bonds.

Culture, 3 days
You'll explore a traditional coffee plantation, and hike along the historic 300-year-old colonial footpaths known as ‘El Camino Real,’ which connect numerous stunning villages, waterfalls and offer breathtaking views.

Chicamocha Canyon Challenge, 2 days
Embark on a two-day adventure in the awe-inspiring Chicamocha Canyon, a 120-million-year-old natural wonder. Your journey begins by traversing the canyon's crest, then winding through scenic tobacco and goat farms. You'll cool off with a refreshing dip in the river where you’ll set up camp for the night, sleeping in hammocks and being lulled to sleep by the sounds of nature. The next day presents the challenge of hiking out of the canyon, but don't worry, you’ll take it nice and slow, ensuring you savor every moment of this incredible experience, and appreciate the stunning surroundings.

Weekend Adrenaline Adventure
Just 30 minutes away lies San Gil, the adventure capital of Colombia. On weekends, it's a breeze to catch a bus there for some high-octane fun. Whether you’re white-water rafting, bungee jumping, or paragliding, San Gil offers endless thrills to satisfy your adventurous spirit.

"The Leap is an awesome company who takes care of every aspect of your trip to make sure you can enjoy it to the fullest"

This trip was honestly amazing and I would highly recommend anyone to take the opportunity to do it.

I met amazing staff and locals over the 6 weeks and also amazing people who I still stay in contact with and I can’t wait to see during the rest of my travels.

The outreach was definitely a highlight as you get to explore more islands and do different activities. The locals are amazing and the sense of community and the appreciation for volunteers makes it so worth doing. I did forest conservation because I love animals and hiking but with The Leap your programme is flexible and if you prefer to teach you can switch over as well which you don’t get with other companies.

What you should know is GO THROUGH THE LEAP!

- Brooke

"Insane!"

Hi to all at The Leap,

This is a bit late but a huge thank you to everyone who was involved in organising Herbie Purces Costa Rica trip. In his own words “it was insane”.

So wonderful they had a “normal” experience in abnormal times.

Our thanks again

- Gwen Purce

"So clear and straightforward "

I’d just like to say how impressed I’ve been by all your amazing organisation, plans and communication. I know she’s mainly communicated with you herself, but it’s all been so clear and straightforward – so thank you. I know this must have been an incredibly difficult time for you and I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending The Leap to any prospective Gappies in future!

- Justine Barnes

" I recommend this trip to anyone who is thinking about doing it!"

One of the best experiences of my life!! I met the most amazing people and experienced so many incredible things. The trip is so well organised and you get a mix of everything Costa Rica has to offer! Lizzie and Carmen were the most incredible group leaders and this made such a difference, I recommend this trip to anyone who is thinking about doing it!

- Maggie Calder

"I cannot recommend enough to all of my friends"

To everyone at The Leap

Archie had the most wonderful six weeks, probably the best he has had so far in his life! We are so glad we chose The Leap to begin his adventures travelling. He said all the Leapers were great people and really fun to be with. The experiences were just incredible and learning about the plastic and turtles fascinating. I think he has made some friends for life and if he ever returns from his travels we will hear lots more about it. Archie really liked Amelia and said she was fun, supportive and a wonderful leader. Just a really fabulous experience which I cannot recommend enough to all of my friends. In a couple of years my daughter will be coming to join a trip on The Leap. Thank you so so much.

"Hand on my heart it's been the experience of a life time"

I've just been having THE best time here! It's gone so quickly, but I feel like I've been here forever at the same time.

We've done a lot of work already, so I feel like we've made a big difference. Through this work we've all learnt a lot, but it's mostly given us a good sense of liberation and generally put a lot of things in perspective. And of course, we now understand how difficult it is for these communities to get just essential amenities!

But the main thing is that I am very happy with the programme, and I can put my hand on my heart when I say it's been the experience of a life time, and I can't wait to continue for the 2nd half of it!

- Peter Blake

"I would say 100% I was able to make a positive contribution"

I was helping the community by making the beach cleaner and also helping protect the turtles from poachers and plastic in the ocean.

- Kit

"Best food!"

The best food I have ever eaten in my life

- Jack

"Helped my confidence so much"

Its helped so much with my confidence and I feel like I know myself better as a person. I’m leaving the trip in such a better place than when I arrived and I’m so grateful for that :)

- Isla

"I can't recommend this enough"

I can’t recommend this enough, I had the most amazing time and made the best memories. Lizzie and Carmen were the best leaders and were so much fun.
