Combine Culture + Community + Wildlife

Welcome to our updated programme for 2024 which focuses on Northern Vietnam - a country dating back to the 3rd century BC and delivering a fascinating mix of culture, history, and mouth-watering culinary delights. Beautiful beaches, towering mountains, meandering rivers, golden Buddhist pagodas, and immaculate paddy fields are ready to be explored by foot, tuk tuk, and bicycle.

Your four-week programme focuses on Northern Vietnam, as it less accessible and in our eyes showcases the best of Vietnam. We have interwoven different phases to give you a diverse and exciting experience which include trekking through the stunning mountains and paddy fields of Sapa, contributing to remote hill tribes, exploring the famous limestone scenery of Cuc Phuong National Park, conserving endangered wildlife, and resting up on a junk boat in Ha Long Bay.

This programme combines the ancient and modern, rural, and urban, with inspiring community and conservation initiatives. This is how it rolls.

Vietnam Programme Itinerary

This programme combines the ancient and modern, rural, and urban, with inspiring community and conservation initiatives. This is how it rolls.

Days 1-3

Hanoi City exploration

Your journey starts in the lively city of Hanoi, located on the banks of the Red River. It is a great entry point as it sets the scene for Vietnam's melting-pot history, especially reflected in its architecture, which is a stunning mix of Chinese shops, golden temples, and ornate Vietnamese houses.

Your base will be at a family-run guest house in the old quarter from which you will explore whilst you sample the local delights, such as their famous beef noodles, papaya spring-rolls and egg coffee “Vietnamese cappuccino”. Delicious, whilst learning to dodge the chaos of tuk tuks and bicycles.

Your first couple of days will be spent getting your bearings whilst visiting the spectacular Hoan Kiem Lake, St. Joseph's Cathedral and the famous Dong Xuan wholesale markets, before hopping on a bike and heading out of town to reach a pretty village on the outskirts of the city. Here you’ll meet a local family who’ll combine a private cooking demonstration, giving you the chance to make your own authentic Vietnamese dishes. After lunch you’ll visit the Lien Mac flower village, which is famous for flowers and vegetables.

On the 3rd night you will travel on the comfy, overnight train to Sapa, a village about 380km northwest of Hanoi, near the border of China .

Accommodation

You will be stay in a local family homestay such as Maih Boutique Homestay: https://www.facebook.com/Miah-Boutique-Homestay-198820990132717/

Days 4-12

Sapa Community + Biking + Trekking

Sapa Sisters – a social enterprise for local women
Welcome to Sapa - a town deep in the north-western mountains of Vietnam, known for its scenic views, hill tribes, rice paddies, and hiking. It is so pretty, and we have arranged for you to experience this area through a dynamic social enterprise called Sapa Sisters, which is owned and run by female guides from ethnic minority Hmong tribe. This enterprise is life-changing as the Hmong highlanders face much higher levels of poverty and many barriers to accessing capital and business connections. Tourism to their area is now providing the opportunity to earn sustainable incomes, helping the wider families and their community to prosper.

You will stay just over a week here living in a homestay for a full-on cultural hit as the sisters guide you to explore the surrounding paddy fields, mountains, hill tribes, and waterfalls by hikes and bikes before helping the community by painting a community house, helping work on the farms, teaching English, sports, and games. Expect full on days but there will time to hang out in Sapa town which has a great vibe, take the cable car into the Fansipan mountain to see Heaven Gate, and be prepared karaoke is a common past time here.

Accommodation

Homestay, rustic, basic but clean and tidy.

Food

3 meals per day cooked by your homestay host – expect rice and noodles.

Days 13-23

Cuc Phuong + Ninh Binh Wildlife volunteering + Exploring

After a few days of rest in Hanoi you will head out to Cuc Phuong, which is the oldest National Park in Vietnam. It is utterly stunning due to the magnificent limestone mountains which rise majestically from the rice-terraces and home to the Muong hill-tribe.

Conservation at Save Vietnam’s Wildlife (SVW)
Your first 5 days will be spent helping out at SVW, set up to save animals from illegal trade. While you are here you will be involved with the rehabilitation of confiscated animals, especially the pangolin, helping with the feeding, cleaning the cages, and with site maintenance.

On the other days you will explore the National Park (by bike) to find the Botanical Gardena and Cave of Prehistoric Man, before heading out to visit the former capital of Hoa Lu. Here you’ll visit the Dinh & Le Kings’ Temples and climb Buddha’s Palm Mountain for the stunning views of mountains and pagodas.

Ninh Binh
Next up is Ninh Binh, an UNESCO Heritage Site, just 2 hours from Hanoi. This is one of Vietnam’s most striking destinations – with enormous mountains and meandering rivers, best explored by boast and of the bicycle.

Accommodation

At SVW you will stay in the park, at the National Park tourist centre. You’ll have a bed, with mozzi net supplied and western style bathroom. Laundry can be done here for a small fee.

Food

3 meals per day from the canteen or Thao Linh Restaurant, offering different choices. Meals are based around rice, meat, and vegetables. However, on the days exploring the National Park lunches will out and about, at an extra cost.

Ha Long Bay Junk Boat Cruise

Ha Long Bay
Your final phase will take to the iconic Ha Long Bay, a World Heritage area of outstanding natural beauty to board a junk styled boat, before resting up on Cat Ba Island.

You will sail off for 1 nights, 2 days on a traditional junk boat, to explore the stunning scenery, which is made up karst rocks, caves, islets, tunnels, lagoons, crystal waters and secluded beaches. It is utterly beautiful, and you will have time to head off on paddle boards and boats to reach the beaches and secret lagoons

In the evening, you will be able to night fish, have a sundowner on the rooftop, watch an Indochina film, or treat yourself to a massage and spot of Tai Chi.

Cat Ba Island
Your final three nights will be spent on the Cat Ba archipelago - the largest of the 367 islands. Here the aim is for you to relax before you take a speedboat back to Hanoi to either fly home or continue with your Asian adventure.

Vietnam Gap Year Programme

The Asian journey for the founders of See Asia Differently (Peter & Eva Jones) began 8 years ago, with the creation of a travel agency in Cambodia. “We wanted to create something a little different, something that matched our passion for the region. By spending time with our clients and offering a range of options, we help them avoid the well-worn path to the tourist traps and instead create bespoke tours that capture the essence of their destination while matching their personal requirements”.

From Cambodia, they expanded to five other Asian countries: Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and Myanmar (Burma). Meaning they can offer holidays in a single destination or multi-country trips.

They are passionate about encompassing sustainable responsible travel with lifting the lid on these exquisite destinations. They have all the need to know contacts and destinations so can curate your perfect adventure on the ground.

"I had the best month with The Leap"

I had the best month with The Leap. It was made so special by our amazing leaders Lizzie and Carmen who were always attentive but made sure everyone was having so much fun. As well as this everyone who I did the trip with was so incredible it was great how well we all got along and how fun we made every experience for each other, from building a shower in Cocal to laughing on a coffee tour in Monteverde to endless blissful beach days in Sámara. I would highly recommend The Leap to anyone looking to travel in a big group and enjoy moving from place to place at a really nice pace.

- Maddy Jones

"This experience was life changing."

Although this is from a personal point of view, I wanted to share the great personal development this trip gave me. I believe travel and unknown/unusual environments affect and shape any individual.

It altered my being in a way i find hard to articulate, it changes you and challenges you that no 9-5 working existence ever could.

- Olivia

"I always felt in good hands"

Our daughter has had the most amazing time in Kenya, The Leap group have been fantastic with details and organization throughout, I always felt we were in good hands. The breadth of volunteering and involvement has been wonderful to see and I know this will have changed her life forever. Thank you.

- Tanya Crone

"The best experience of my life!"

Thanks to everyone involved as they have managed to make the trip a once and a life experience! I have learnt so much about the local community which will stay with me forever, this has shown that at home we are so privileged in every aspect of life and that anything we have done for the community has and could change lives. Also helping the fish community and restoring the ocean has opened my eyes.

- Niamh Anderson

"So clear and straightforward "

I’d just like to say how impressed I’ve been by all your amazing organisation, plans and communication. I know she’s mainly communicated with you herself, but it’s all been so clear and straightforward – so thank you. I know this must have been an incredibly difficult time for you and I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending The Leap to any prospective Gappies in future!

- Justine Barnes

"Steady hands on the tiller "

So grateful to you all at The Leap. It’s been the most amazing experience for Ella and we can’t compliment you and Milly enough for all your friendly and efficient organisation and your very steady hands on the tiller in choppy waters throughout this last month!

- David

"Team were amazing"

Thanks so much for your kind email, I am sorry that I only have just seen it now! That evening was definitely a scary shock but it has now made me so much aware about going out at night.

The Leap team were also amazing and I cannot thank Chris and Meli enough for helping me both at the hospital and then the following morning when dealing with insurance. My mum is also very, very grateful that you guys have been there to help the entire time!
